The Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba has remanded ASP Drambi Vandi over the alleged murder of Barrister Bolanle Raheem, who was shot dead on Christmas Day, at Ajah Road, along the Lekki Expressway, Lagos.
Chief Magistrate, Miss Adeola Olatunbosun, granted the request for remand sought by the Lagos State Attorney-General (Lagos AG), Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, and ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution, Dr. Jide Martins, for legal advice.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that on Friday, Lagos AG filed a one-count charge against ASP Drambi Vandi for the murder of the pregnant lawyer.
Lagos AG applied for the remand of the defendant pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos, 2015.
He told Chief Magistrate, Miss Adeola Olatunbosun that the basis for the remand is to allow the police to conclude its investigations into the matter.
The charge read: “That you ASP Drambi Vandi on the 25th day of December 2022, at Ajah Road, along the Lekki Expressway, Lagos, unlawfully killed one Omobolanle Raheem by shooting the deceased in the chest contrary to Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.”
With the charge, the Attorney General, who appeared before the Chief Magistrate Court, Yaba, applied for the remand of the defendant pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos, 2015.
The magistrate adjourned to January 30, 2023 to await legal advice.
Bolanle, a mother of one, was shot dead at Ajah on Christmas day. The lawyer was said to be four-month pregnant with twins.
In a statement by the Force Public Relations Office, Muyiwa Adejobi, the Police boss who ordered the immediate suspension of the officer, however, sought a detailed report on the incident.
According to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, the recommendation for the suspension of the officer is in line with the internal disciplinary processes of the Force.
The IGP further noted that the suspension was also expected to create an enabling environment for necessary legal procedures to uphold justice in the case without interference. The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer.
