American rapper Meek Mill has been released from prison on Tuesday following the order of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, local media reported.

The Philadelphian, whose real name is Robert Rihmeek Williams, spent five months in prison following a controversial ruling but was immediately released on unsecured bail, according to NBC in Philadelphia.

Mill said on social media that his incarceration had been a “nightmare” and expressed his gratitude to the court and his supporters following the ruling.

“To the Philly District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice. I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues,” he tweeted.

Judge Genece Brinkley sentenced Mill to two-to-four years in prison in November for violating probation on a 2008 gun and drug case. Brinkley said a failed drug test and non-compliance with a court order restricting Williams’ travel led to the sentence.

In making its decision Tuesday, the court questioned the credibility of Mill’s arresting officer who has since been identified on a list of allegedly corrupt cops.

The case became a flashpoint on criminal justice reform, with the rapper supported by many celebrating including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Jay-Z.

Mill left the correctional facility in a helicopter with Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin to the basketball team’s playoff game in South Philadelphia against the Miami Heat.

“I feel great,” Williams told NBC as he entered Wells Fargo Center, where he was reportedly cheered by the crowd as he rang the game’s opening bell.

In February 2011, Rick Ross announced the signing of Mill along with fellow Nigerian-American rapper Wale to his Maybach Music Group (MMG) label.
