Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti stunned many of his followers on social media recently when he said his late father, Fela Kuti, the originator of the Afrobeat genre of music, didn’t like his first album.

Femi in a series of Twitter posts, stated that although the late Fela didn’t like the first album, he loved the second and the third.

“He didn’t like my first album. He loved the second and the third he loved too. He had passed by Beng Beng Beng, but he had heard most of the tracks at the old Shrine. He used to get up to dance or take a solo. The track, ‘Mind Your Own Business’ was his favourite,” he wrote.

Answering a question of Fela ever seeing him as a competition, Femi said that people around the late Afrobeat legend tried to make it an issue but it never was.

“People around him tried to make that an issue, I had moved out of Kalakuta then… But I think he understood what was going on by some things he said in private to my siblings and I. He always wondered why people tried to create a problem,” he added.
