When DJ Jimmy Jatt started out as a DJ in Nigeria, no one gave him a chance. Over the years, this entertainment phenomenon has grown beyond the young lad who started out in Obalende to becoming a revered entertainment icon in Africa.
The ace DJ in his book Avant Garde talks about his days of little beginnings. He says being innovative has worked for him so far.
I am the first Nigerian DJ to put out an album. I have an album called Definition, it has twenty four tracks in it and features over 50 artistes.. Remember I started out in Obalende making selections on tape for people. I have always thought that there must be something new or new step to take. So that is how we moved from making tapes in a small studio in Obalende to playing parties across the cities and across the country to playing across the world and then we moved from that to doing our own events before moving to radio and TV.
Finally I thought one could actually put out records and may be even set up one’s own radio station. That was how my first album was born and people still remember hits like Stylee.
What I believe is that in life, events and circumstances will always create opportunities for you. When we started out for instance, who would have thought deejaying would be laptop based.
