Peter Anyang Nyong’o, father of Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, emerges the winner of the Kisumu governorship election in Kenya.

Leading with over 95% of the votes counted, the Orange Democratic Movement contender has about 261, 972 votes, representing 63% of the total votes cast. While his closest opponent,the incumbent governor Jackton Ranguma has 147, 852 votes (35%).

Christine Otieno, David Wayiera, and Peter Omolo have just 1% of the votes between them.

 

Though Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission hasn’t formally announced the results, Nyong’o is assured of victory.

Nyongo leveraged on daughter’s fame to garner votes. His daughter, Lupita campaigned for her father months before voting took place.

In a video shared via her Facebook page, the actress persuaded electorates of the state to vote for her father through an emotional appeal.

Nyong’o grew up in an artistic family, where family get-togethers often included performances by the children in the family, and trips to see plays. She attended Rusinga International school in Kenya and acted in school plays.
