Every year despite the success of The Headies awards organised by Ayo Animashaun and his team, it is usually trailed with controversies.

As usual this year’s edition hasn’t been without its own fair share of controversies. The award ceremony tagged Nigeria’s Grammy has been called a Yoruba award by individuals who are dissatisfied with the outcome.

A certain media personality, Mc Akonuche alleged that the Headies is a Yoruba award because no Igbo artiste performed and won an award.

Reacting to these allegations, Animashaun said he has nothing to say about the Headies being called a Yoruba award.

“I don’t have any comment on claims that we only celebrate Yoruba musicians. If you check the list of nominees and winners in every edition, you can tell by yourself. Looking at the circumstances we operated in, I am excited about the outcome of this edition”, he told Goldmyne TV.

Speaking further he emphasized on the success of this year’s edition, stressing that it was organised without a sponsor.

“If I needed to pay everyone what they deserved, perhaps, we would not be able to organise the awards ceremony. For me, things can be rough or good, but you have to admit where you find yourself and grow from there. If we hold the award because of money, we would not have lasted 12 years. We’ve seen many shows or ideas that collapsed after two or three years of their existence because the organisers were not making money, but the Headies is here to stay for a long while. We know that each year cannot be the same; some years were very good with lots of sponsorships while we would have to struggle in some cases.”
