Over the years Remilekun Khalid Safaru(Reminisce) is one of the few Nigerian indigenous rappers who have remained relevant by combining street smart, talent and sexualized music videos to remain on top of his game.
His hit tracks like Tesojue, Kako bi chicken , Skilashi, Angelina, Kpomo and the new Konsignment have the sexualisation of women’s bodies written all over them.
Just like Olamide, Phyno and Flavour whose success story cannot be told without the deployment of this explicit sexual content, Reminisce is playing this card to sell his music.
One of the core reasons why Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda video has millions of views is because women were gyrating their exposed flesh to the lyrics of the song. Most of the successful mainstream Nigerian acts owe their success to the deployment of sex as a marketing tool to sell their music.
According to Daily Telegraph ,girls who are exposed to sexualized content are more likely to endorse gender stereotypes and place attractiveness as central to a woman’s value. Boys who are exposed to this content are more likely to sexually harass females, and have inappropriate expectations of them.
Reminsce’ new video Konsignment has heavy sexual innuendoes. In one of the verses he says:
“You already know I want to eat your Kpomo
I can see it in your eyes, O ti Concur
The flesh on your body is Bokoto
Emi ni Ayinla Fuji ropopo”
It is widely believed in the music industry that videos like this sell more and give the artistes the return on their investments(R.O.I)
In all of these, women are seen as the object used to pass these sexualized messages . In some videos, the woman’s face is not shown. Instead, her body becomes a tool and is put on display.
Reminisce’s Skilashi buttresses this point. The song itself is dedicated to the glorification of a woman’s butt and women can be seen twerking in the video.
The question is this:Is Reminisce going to rely on only this strategy alone to sell his music? Will he adopt the Mode 9 modus operandi anytime soon?
