South African actress, Charlbi Dean, who appeared in Palme d’Or winning film “Triangle of Sadness” has died in New York, at the age of 32.
This was disclosed by her representative on Tuesday, saying “it’s devastating”.
TheNewsGuru.com reports that Dean passed away on Monday from a sudden unexpected illness.
Neither the representative nor the reports provided any details on the illness that caused her death.
Dean co-starred alongside Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson in Swedish director Ruben Ostlund’s “Triangle of Sadness.”
The sharp satire about class conflict won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year.
In the film, Dean plays Yaya, a model who is invited onto a cruise for the ultra-rich who find their status suddenly undermined by unexpected events.
Dean was born on 5 February 1990 and raised in Cape Town to Joanne Muller and Johan Kriek.
She had a brother, Alex and began modelling at the age of 6, appearing in commercials and catalogues.
She signed with Alfa Model Management when she was 12 and was homeschooled from the age of 14.
She travelled between Cape Town, where she attended Waterfront Theatre School and the likes of Tokyo, New York, and London for her career.
In October 2008, Dean and fellow model Ashton Schnehage survived a car crash. Her injuries included a broken wrist, four broken ribs, and a collapsed lung.
She was hospitalised at Milnerton Medi-Clinic and received life-saving surgery, the scars from which she later sported at an AMI Alexandre Mattiussi fashion show.
She took a break from her career after the accident.
In 2010, Dean made her acting debut in the film adaptation of Spud as Amanda, a role she would reprise in the sequel Spud 2: The Madness Continues.
She went on to star in the films Don’t Sleep in 2017 and An Interview with God in 2018.
During the same year, the South African actress Dean landed the role of Syonide, a recurring character she played for two seasons of the DC Universe series Black Lightning.
In February 2020, it was announced Dean had joined the cast of Ruben Östlund’s satirical film Triangle of Sadness, which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and won the Palme d’Or.
