Delta state commissioner for works, James Augoye has said the state government has put in place plans to combating to a halt flooding in the state capital, while revealing the government has awarded last year a N1.7 billion contract to that effect.
Speaking in a Hot FM radio interview, Augoye stated that the sewage underground drainage system with 2.5 diameter will connect DLA, Jesus Saves and Agric Roads in Asaba.
The commissioner said there are two discharge points which are Marble Hill and Cornerstone connected to Iyiabi River across the Asaba-Benin expressway.
Augoye also stated that his office has instructed the contracting firm handling the Okpanam road project to place caution barriers at the manholes on the Okpanam road walkway to avoid people falling over during floods.
He stressed that covering up the manholes would make desilting the drains impossible.
While noting that work cannot commence on the DLA/Jesus Saves axis until the underground drainage is completed, the works commissioner said the state government has contracted a firm to do a study of the DBS road which is the lowest point of the Okpanam road.
He appealed to residents of the state capital to be patient as the incessant flooding would soon be a thing of the past.
