Togolese footballer, Emmanuel Adebayor, has called it an end to his professional football career.
Adebayor spent over a decade in England playing for Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace but has now called time on his career.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the forward won the African Footballer of the Year award in 2008 during his time at Arsenal.
He was also named Togo’s Footballer of the Year for five consecutive years between 2005 and 2009.
Adebayor spent most of his peak years in England, but also enjoyed spells in France with Metz and Monaco at the start of his career, and had a brief stint at Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2011.
After moving back to England following his time in Madrid, Adebayor had three years at Tottenham and six months at Palace before moving to Turkey to join Istanbul Basaksehir at the start of 2017.
He would go on to play for fellow Turkish outfit Kayserispor, prior to trying his luck in Paraguay with Olimpia.
Adebayor finished his career back in his homeland at Semassi, and is now walking away from the sport after over two decades as a professional.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that he played as a striker for Togolese Championnat National club Semassi. He also played for English clubs Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, as well as French side Metz, Monégasque team Monaco, Spanish team Real Madrid, Turkish clubs İstanbul Başakşehir and Kayserispor, and Paraguay’s Club Olimpia.
When he joined Olimpia Asunción in 2020, he became the highest paid player in Paraguay.[4]
Adebayor represented the Togo national team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the country’s debut, and to date only, appearance at the World Cup.
In January 2010, he was one of the players involved when the Togo team’s bus came under gunfire on the way to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, after which he retired from national team duty.
In 2013, he returned to the Togo team for the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa, where he helped them to qualify for the quarter-finals. He is currently Togo’s all-time top goalscorer with 32 goals.
