Top Nigerian footballer dies in ghastly motor accident

Paul Julius Goewam,  a 20-year-old Nigerian footballer, has died in a car crash in Cyprus.

According to police reports, the young footballer was said to be driving on Paralimni-Protaras road when his car collided with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, near Pernera.

The talented strike, a native of Plateau State, had just joined Cypriot club, Enosis Neon Paralimni three weeks ago from Egyptian side El Gaish.

In a heartfelt statement, Enosis Neon Paralimni FC expressed their deep sadness at the passing of their player, who had overcome adversity to exhibit incredible fortitude and tenacity in his brief life.

“It is with deep sadness and pain that we express our sincere condolences on the unexpected loss of our footballer Paul Julius,” the club’s statement read

“The tragic news of his death has shocked us all. Despite the hardships and sufferings he faced to join our family, he remained steadfast and determined to fulfill his goals. 

“His memory will live on in our hearts, and his absence will be felt. We are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

 Meanwhile, the 74-year-old driver of the other car is being treated in hospital but is not in a critical condition.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to report as the incident is being investigated by the Famagusta Traffic Department.
