Roseline Oladimeji, a Chief Nursing Sister, has advised pregnant women to allow their husbands to suck their breasts.

The expert said this would help to prepare them for breastfeeding after delivery.

Oladimeji spoke at a programme on the 2021 World Breastfeeding Week organised by Amuwo Odofin Maternal and Child Centre in Festac Town, Lagos.

“Allow your husband to suck your breasts during pregnancy. Apart from bonding, it will help the nipples to be out and make it easier for your baby to latch on,” she said.

NAN quoted her as advising women to also rub vaseline on nipples at night before going to bed. This, according to Oladimeji, softens them.

The Chief Nurse said proper preparation of the breasts during pregnancy forestalls lactation problems after delivery.

She explained that the colostrum, the first form of milk produced after birth, contains nutrients that help boost the baby’s immunity.

Oladimeji said some types of foods, herbs and medications could harm babies through the breast milk.

She warned that taking palmwine to improve lactation could introduce alcohol into the baby’s system during breastfeeding.

The expert further appealed to mothers to ignore counsels from persons who are not medical professionals.
