Popular British broadcaster, Piers Morgan has stepped down as host of ‘Good Morning Britain’, a show on ITV, following controversial remarks he made about Megan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.
According to BBC, ITV’s spokesperson broke the news on Tuesday, explaining that the media personality notified the organisation of his resignation.
“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add,” the company’s spokesperson said.
The development comes hours after Monday’s show which witnessed a face-off between Morgan and Alex Beresford, fellow presenter.
Morgan had during the show expressed his thoughts over Meghan’s revelations when she featured in a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The 55-year-old had stated that he “didn’t believe a word” of what the Duchess of Sussex told Oprah during the interview.
“I don’t believe a word she says, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report, and the fact that she fired up this onslaught against our royal family I think is contemptible,” Morgan had said.
Beresford, however, took a contrary stance, saying: “I understand that you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle or had one and she cut you off. She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her.”
This however resulted in an intense exchange between the duo which saw Morgan walked off set and returned about ten minutes later.
The occurrence also sparked a plethora of criticism with over 41,000 people calling out Morgan and ITV — leading to an Ofcom investigation.
