In furtherance of its commitment towards empowering women across the world, the United States Government is this week hosting an inaugural International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP),titled “Overcoming Barriers to Women’s Economic Participation”
with 18 participants from countries across the globe ,including Nigeria and Ghana.
The program which is organized and under the auspices of Women Global Development Prosperity Initiative (WGDP), was established by the White House and championed by an Advisor to President Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump.
Department of State Spokesperson in a statement described the program as “ the first whole-of-government approach to empower women globally to fulfill their economic potential.”
“ The W-GDP initiative demonstrates the United States’ commitment to advancing women’s economic empowerment with a goal of supporting 50 million women globally by 2025.
“This new IVLP was created to support W-GDP with a focus on identifying and reducing the legal, regulatory, and cultural barriers that constrain women’s full and free participation in the global economy”, said the statement .
Other participants drawn from leaders in both public and private sectors around the world, include Burma, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Republic of Kosovo, Lesotho, Malaysia, Morocco, Paraguay, Philippines, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and Uganda.
As part of the program, participants are scheduled to visit five different U.S. cities including – Washington D.C.; San Francisco; Kansas City; Des Moines; and New York City – to meet with federal, state, and local governments, private companies, multilateral and non-governmental organizations, business incubators, as well as financial institutions.
Before leaving US, participants are expected to develop action plans to overcome barriers to women’s economic participation in their home countries and further advance W-GDP.
