Augoye seeks legislation to curb destruction of public properties in Delta

Chief James Augoye, the member representing Okpe State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly on Wednesday presented a bill to the House to prevent and prohibit the destruction and vandalization of public properties and assets in the State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the bill titled Prevention and Prohibition of Destruction and Vandalization of Public Properties and Assets Bill 2024 scaled second reading during the plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor.

The bill, which was unanimously supported and debated by lawmakers, when passed into law, will provide legislation to prevent and prohibit the destruction and vandalization of public properties and assets in Delta.

Leading debate on the bill when presented for second reading, Chief Augoye argued that the bill became necessary, arising from his personal experience when he was the State’s Commissioner for Works.

Augoye emphasised with deep concern how individuals and groups destroy and vandalise public properties such as roads and public schools expected to serve the interest of the general public.

Moving the motion, seconded by the member representing Ika North East, Hon. Marilyn Okowa-Daramola, Augoye urged members of the House to support the bill for a speedy passage.

Other lawmakers who spoke in favour of the bill are Hon. Perkins Umukoro, Majority Leader; Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, Hon. Oboro Preyor, Hon. Oloye Pereotu, Hon. Frank Esenwa, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu and Hon. Marilyn Okowa-Daramola.

They explained that the bill when passed into law will no doubt curb the menace of destruction and vandalization of public properties in the State.

Following debate on the bill, Speaker of the House referred the bill to the House Committee on Rules and Business, Legal and Judiciary for further legislative scrutiny. The House, thereafter, adjourned plenary to Thursday 5 September, 2024.
