An Oyo State High Court has ordered the Federal Government of Nigeria to pay Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, the sum of N20 billion.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the High Court, sitting in Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, ordered the FG to pay the sum as damages for invading Igboho’s residence.
The court, presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola, declared that the raid carried out by the Department of State Service (DSS) on Igboho’s residence in Ibadan was illegal.
Recall that operatives of the DSS invaded the residence of Igboho on July 1, 2021, but the Yoruba nation separatist escaped to Benin Republic and attempted to fly to Germany with his wife before he was arrested by authorities in Cotonou.
The DSS confirmed that 2 people were killed as gunmen resisted their invasion of Igboho’s house on July 1 while 13 persons were arrested and 5 AK-47 assault rifles recovered by operatives.
Justice Akintola in his judgment said if the identities of the individual operatives were determined, they would have been liable to pay the damages and not the FG.
TNG reports the court also dismissed an application filed by the Attorney General of Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, challenging its jurisdiction to hear allegations against the government and DSS.
