President Muhammadu Buhari’s new appointment to head the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has arrived at the Senate for screening.
Recall that President Buhari had asked the Senate to confirm Mr Bawa as substantive Chairman of the EFCC in accordance with Paragraph 2(3) of Part1, CAP E1 of EFCC Act 2004.
At the time of filing this report, the Senate has resolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the Executive Communication for the confirmation of Bawa.
Buhari had suspended Ibrahim Magu as Acting Chairman of the EFCC in order to allow for unhindered inquiry by a presidential investigation panel under the tribunals of inquiry act and other relevant laws.
Buhari then approved that the EFCC Director of Operations, Mohammed Umar, should take charge and oversee the activities of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation and further directives in that regard.
If confirmed, Bawa, a trained EFCC investigator, will become the youngest person ever to hold the office of the EFCC chair at the age of 40.
He has been hailed as having vast experience in the investigation and prosecution of Advance Fee Fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes.
He has undergone several specialized trainings in different parts of the world, and was one of the pioneer EFCC Cadet Officers in 2005.
Bawa holds a B.Sc degree in Economics, and Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy.
