'I am heart-broken by this incident' - Obi on school building collapse

Mr Peter Obi, Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential poll, has described as disheartening, the tragic incident of the collapse of a school building in Jos, the Plateau capital.

Mr Yunusa Tanko, his spokesman, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, regretted the deaths and injuries from the unfortunate incident.

“I am heart-broken by this incident; it is particularly bad that the incident occurred while the school was in session and students were writing their examinations.

“I can only imagine the trauma of these young ones witnessing such a tragic occurrence, and even their parents, who are undoubtedly worried about the safety of the children.

“I understand that rescue operation was swift. I thank the FRSC, NEMA, Red Cross, Army, Police and individuals helping out with the safe rescue of our children and their teachers,” he quoted Obi as saying.

Obi sympathised with the government and people of Plateau, the management, staff, and students of the school, and the families of the victims.

He called on the government to carry out thorough investigation into the tragic incident to unravel the cause and help prevent a reccurrence.

“My sincere prayers are with the remaining trapped children and teachers for their safe rescue.

“May God grant eternal rest to the dead, give their families the fortitude to bear the painful losses, and grant quick recovery to the injured,” he said.
