Man, woman docked for impersonating naval officers

Two persons who allegedly posed as naval officers to obtain N250, 000 under false pretences were arraigned in Lagos on Tuesday.

They were brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, Betty Okoroafor, 28, and Patrick Edelugo, 42, are facing a seven-count charge of impersonating, obtaining under false pretences and conspiracy.

The accused pleaded not guilty when the charges were read.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Oladele Adebayo, told the court that the offences were committed on Sept. 16, 2016 at No. 31, Ondo St., Ebute Meta.

He said the accused persons posed as naval officers and in position to assist in getting job slots in the Navy.

According to the prosecutor, the accused succeeded in obtaining N250, 000 from their victims.

Adebayo said that the offences contravened Sections 109, 170, 285, 299, 312, 409 and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O.A Fowowe-Erusiafe, admitted them to a bail of N100, 000 with two responsible and gainfully employed sureties in like sum.

Further hearing in the case has been adjourned till Feb. 23.
