Some Nigerians are calling on the federal government to step in and review the process of registering for National Identification Number (NIN).
They called on the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure Nigerians do not suffer unduly, and get exposed unnecessarily to the dangers of COVID-19 in the process of trying to register for NIN.
“I’m in support with my fellow Nigerians to call on the Minister to step in and review the NIMC process in place to ensure Nigerians are not meant to suffer unduly”.

Recall that the FG had on December 15, 2020 declared that all SIM cards that were not registered with valid NIN on the network of telecommunications companies would be blocked after December 30, 2020.
However, following public outcry against the short notice, the FG later extended the deadline, giving 3 weeks’ extension for subscribers with NIN from December 30, 2020, to January 19, 2021, and a 6-week extension for subscribers without NIN from December 30, 2020, to February 9, 2021.
Meanwhile, the FG did not carry out its threat of blocking SIM cards of subscribers with NIN on January 19. The FG unified the deadline, postponing the deadline to February 9 altogether.
However, reacting to the NIN registration process, Nigerians have said the process is a flop, with #NINRegistrationFlops beginning to trend on Twitter as of Sunday with Nigerians calling for a review of the whole process.

I hope @DrIsaPantami and the NCC (@NgComCommission) realize that insisting on the deactivation of SIM cards by February 9 is tantamount to sabotaging the financial inclusion agenda of the FG? #NINRegistrationFlops pic.twitter.com/e3EeVeaNVo

Just yesterday Nigeria recorded 1,883 Covid-19 cases (via @NCDCgov), we’ve been recording high numbers in 2021. Is @DrIsaPantami oblivious of this fact? Is He more powerful than the NCDC? Why put Nigeria citizens at risk? #NINRegistrationFlops pic.twitter.com/M2jxgZbcTm

It’s beginning to look like @DrIsaPantami and @nimc_ng made a pronouncement and issued a deadline without doing the needful, putting Nigerians through unnecessary stress and exposing them to the dangers of Covid-19. #NINRegistrationFlops pic.twitter.com/jMs4AzAflN

How is it possible that @DrIsaPantami has no regard for the life of Nigerians? Is the linking of sim cards to NIN more important than ensuring the safety of people in a pandemic? The Covid-19 numbers in Nigeria keep spiking daily. #NINRegistrationFlops pic.twitter.com/A6mPwx9aXT

It is shocking that despite the evident flaw in the processes of @nimc_ng, despite the spike in Covid-19 cases in Nigeria during the second wave, @DrIsaPantami and the @NgComCommission still insist on an outrageous deadline. #NINRegistrationFlops

The NCC’s policy could end up taking away mobile connectivity from some of the most vulnerable people in society. The socio-economic implications are also terrible. Does @DrIsaPantami know this? #NINRegistrationFlops pic.twitter.com/21zPoHIXfW

It’s shows that NIMC made a pronouncement and issued a deadline without putting the software in place and generally putting their house in order. #NINRegistrationFlops pic.twitter.com/A007VyirFZ
