Frustrated Nigerians have organized a one-week protest, dubbed “one week of rage,” to express their dissatisfaction with the current hardships in the country.

In related news, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has instructed youths in the Niger Delta to participate in the nationwide protest against bad governance starting on August 1, 2024. The council urged security forces to be measured in their response, emphasizing the importance of peaceful protests.

Reports indicate that the federal government is engaging traditional rulers and religious leaders to dissuade youths from joining the protests. Despite statements from the Chief of Army Staff, the Inspector General of Police, state governors, ministers, and other top government officials discouraging protests, IYC President Dr. Theophilus Alaye has encouraged youths, especially those of Ijaw descent, to take part in the demonstrations.

Dr. Alaye highlighted the severe hardships faced by the people of the Niger Delta, noting that a liter of fuel now costs over N2,000, a sachet of pure water is priced at N100, and other essential commodities have become unaffordable for many. The resulting hunger and suffering have led to increased mortality in rural areas.

Alaye questioned the current administration’s opposition to citizens expressing their dissatisfaction and reminded that the APC government came to power in 2015 through protests against the previous People’s Democratic Party (PDP) government over issues like insecurity, unemployment, and corruption. He emphasized that protest is a universal right, allowing citizens to hold authorities accountable and urge them to consider policies that promote national development.
