The recent union of two Canada-based Nigerian men has ignited reactions within the social media community, particularly against the backdrop of the stark contrast between their marriage and the prevailing legal and cultural norms in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, same-sex relationships are neither legally recognized nor accepted in many cultural circles, and the law not only bans same-sex marriage but also prohibits same-sex “amorous relationships” and membership in gay rights organizations.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014, signed a bill that criminalizes such relationships and imposes severe penalties for homosexual activities, including imprisonment of up to 14 years.

This legal framework reflects the prevailing societal attitudes towards such unions in many parts of Africa, where traditional values often conflict with contemporary views on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, queer or questioning person (LGBTQ+) rights.

Bright and Ifyoraz’s wedding ceremony which held on Sunday 27th August, has drawn both support and criticism, sparking a broader conversation about the complexities of love, relationships, and societal norms.

This is especially as it suggests that should the pair decide to return to Nigeria, they may not be recognized or accepted as a couple under the country’s prevailing legal and cultural norms.

In response to reactions, Ifyoraz expressed, “I got married today to the love of my life,” while Bright, who seems to occupy the female role in the relationship, stated that they embarked on this journey simply for love.
