Three teenagers in court over alleged cultism

Three teenagers- Miracle Eze, 14; Onyebuchi Orji, 19 and David Adebayo,17-, caught belonging to secret societies, were on Wednesday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to unlawful societies.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted each of the accused bail of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adekomaiya said that the sureties should be blood relations of the accused and should show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He, however, said the underage- Eze and Adebayo- should be kept in the Boy’s Remand Home, while Orji should be remanded in Badagry Prison pending perfection of their bail conditions.

Adekomaiya adjourned the case until Sept. 10 for mention.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Akpan Ikem, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 27 at 8.00p.m at Seme, Badagry are of Lagos.

Ikem said that the accused unlawfully assembled in a manner that threatened people and disturbed the public peace.

“The accused also did take oath binding them to be a member of Eye and Aiye Confraternity,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 36, 44 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Each of the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
