As Nigerians mourn the passage of former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh, former Governor of Edo State, Senator Oserheimen Osunbor has described his passage as a big loss to democracy.
In a short tribute, Osunbor described Momoh as an icon of democracy that Nigerians will never be in a hurry to forget.
He said “it was with shock and disbelief that I recelved the sad news that Prince Tony Momoh has passed on. I was incredulous until I put a call across and confirmed that indeed the news was
sadly true.
I had visited him in November 2020 at his Abuja residence and as usual, we discussed a range of issues from politics and the key issues for constitution amendment to religion. It was often intriguing listening to him discussing authoritatively the meaning and essence of life and creation as taught by the Grail Message of which he was an adherent with comparative references to the Holy Bible and the Holy Quran.
Hardly did I know that that was going to be our last meeting.
” I first met Tony Momoh about August 1983 in his office at Daily Times Ikeja when I went to submit an article for publication in Business Times.
” His reception was warm and that marked the start of my weekly contributions to the Business Law column which ran for three years
until August 1986 Prince Tony Momoh’s commitment and service to Nigeria is public knowledge.
His interventions from time to time, starting with his “Letters to My Countrymen” when he was Minister of Information and other numerous publications, not to mention his deeply intellectual newspaper interviews were unmistakeable attributes of a man who sought progress for his country.
“He became involved in party politics as another way of direct
involvement rather than playing the limiting role of an arm.chair critic.
“His role in the formation of the ruling All Progressives Congress as Chairman of CPC, one of the three Legacy Parties, paved the way for the victory of APC in 2015.
“He strove to enthrone peace and reconciliation in APC especially in our Edo state, Nigeria has lost an icon.
May his soul rest in peace and may God comfort his immediate family, his extended family and loved ones and give them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
