The Nigerian transportation system is about to witness a historic turnaround especially with the massive nationwide infrastructure delivery under the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
Sooner than expected, the noisy, rickety trains will give way to technologically advanced light rails with the exclusive right-of-way.
Adding another feather to the cap of its achievements, the minsitry of transportation under Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi recently commenced test running some of newly acquired rails but was later suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has now kept the entire country almost on a lockdown mode.
If the video exclusively obtained by TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) from a top official of the transport ministry is anything to go by, then Nigerians are in for a good treat once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
According to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the ministry opted for a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) with ten coaches. ‘Each coach can lift as many as 88 sitting passengers. It’s already acquired and been test run on the Lagos-Ibadan corridor by the ministry. The one for Kaduna to Abuja was about to leave the seaport before coronavirus broke out,’ the official said.
TNG reports that a diesel multiple unit or DMU is a multiple-unit train powered by on-board diesel engines. A DMU requires no separate locomotive, as the engines are incorporated into one or more of the carriages. Diesel-powered single-unit railcars are also generally classed as DMUs.
