Gombe state University has concluded arrangements to open its premises for academic sessions to continue for New intakes who were doing registration before ASUU embarked on strike action.
The Gombe State University management on Thursday asked the 100-level students of the institution to resume next week Monday.
Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, since Monday, February 14, 2022, at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, had declared industrial action due to the failure of the Federal Government to meet its agreement with them.
According to a statement dated Thursday, which was made available by the Deputy Registrar of the institution Musa Sarki, the 100-level students would resume on August 22, 2022.
The statement partly read, “Consequent upon consultations held among the various stakeholders in the university, it was resolved to allow 100 level students to report back on Monday, August 22, 2022, to complete their registration processes, matriculate and complete the first semester, 2021/2022 academic session.
Reacting to the decision of the school authorities to reconvene 100-level students, the GSU ASUU chairman, Dr. Suleiman Jauro, said the Association would only decide on its next line of action after a meeting on Friday.
He said, “I will only speak after a meeting of the union. Thank you.”
Recall that Ladoke Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso last week called off its strike and opened its premises for academic activities on Thursday, August 18.
The announcement was contained via a circular that was signed and released by the School registrar, Dr. Kayode Ogunleye.
The circular reads in part: The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has called off its unions’ six months old strike.
“Upon the directive of the Visitor to the university, the management, hereby, informs all staff and students that the university will continue its academic activities for the first semester of the 2021/2022 academic session on Thursday, August 18, 2022”.
While urging staff and students to abide by the directive, the statement further assures staff and students that the amended academic calendar for the semester will soon be made available.
“On behalf of the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. M. 0. Liasu, I welcome all students back to the campus and wish them a crisis-free semester”, the statement added.
The management of the institution had earlier announced May 26, 2022, as the official resumption of academic activities some weeks ago.
But members of ASUU in the school which had been on strike for the past six months refused to resume academic activities despite the school management’s order.
