There was fear and tension in the Ojodu Abiodun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State on Sunday, following an explosion in the community.
The residents of the community claimed that they did not know what caused the explosion.
Some feared that the explosion in the early hours of Sunday could be a bomb blast.
However, the Ogun State Police Command has doused tension claiming it resulted because some chemicals reacted with compartments in a refuse dump close to the community.
He said, “the explosion was a result of a chemical reaction that occurred in the compartment of a refuse dump.”
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun, Lanre Bankole, when he was informed about the explosion, quickly directed the Explosive Ordinance Department to the scene to unravel the real cause of the scary sound.
“The finding of the team was that the explosion was as a result of a chemical reaction that occurred in the compartment of refuse dump, being the refuse dumping ground within the Tarmac along the River Valley Estate,” he stated.
The police spokesperson maintained that the explosion wasn’t in any way an attack and asked residents not to pannick.
He added that the attack happened at the midnight when nobody was at the refuse dump site.
He added that no component of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found at the scene or anywhere within the area, adding that no life or property was lost as a result of the explosion.
The police chief urged Ogun residents not to panic, walk and work freely, saying there is no cause for alarm in the said community.
