Chairman Board of Management, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Bashorun Adedoja Adewolu has called for synergy between the management of the institution and the University of Benin in areas of research and training as well as to uphold the vision of the founding fathers of the institution who include Late Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia (Rtd) in delivering quality Health care in the Country.

Adewolu, speaking yesterday in Benin City during the official visit of the newly inaugurated Board of Management to the health institution urged the management team to embrace research and training (education) in addressing the challenges in the health sector.

He sued for collaboration between the University of Benin and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) to enhance the hospitals productivity and service delivery, “There cannot be a teaching hospital without a University. I was a member of the Board of University of Abuja. At that time, there was dichotomy between the University and the Teaching Hospital. Back then, I approach the vice chancellor to say you cannot be in the university without a hospital, even when you have a faculty of medicine. What I want to say here is that, we were the first board to set up the Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital in Abuja and of course they are following UBTH and UNIBEN,” Adewolu said.

Adewolu who eulogized the contributions of the founding fathers of the hospital said there was need to sustain the legacies of Late Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia insisting that such can only be achieved by pursuing aggressive research and educational training of medical personnels.

Addressing the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Osasere Orumwense, Adewolu urged the vice chancellor to partner with UBTH in the areas of research and training noting that the university community is a partner in progress with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. “To make the Teaching Hospital meaningful, we need your cooperation and that is why you see the decree that set up the hospital make provision for the University representative to be a member of the Board,” Adewolu said.

On his part, vice chancellor of the University of Benin assured the UBTH Board Chairman of the necessary support to the Teaching Hospital noting “that there is no gap between UBTH and UNIBEN.”
