Some members of the House of Representatives have opted for a N16 million cash settlement instead of collecting Toyota Camry, a luxury car of N42 million.
TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) authoritatively gathered that the lawmakers preferred the cash settlement to the N42m Toyota Camry luxury car.
Recall that the House of Representatives had awarded a contract of N5billion for the purchase of 400 units of 2020 Toyota Camry model as utility cars for members of the House.
Multiple sources privy to this development told TNG that rather than pick the cars purchased at N42m per unit some lawmakers opted for a cash of N16m.
One of the sources that spoke to TNG under the condition of anonymity said”yes it’s true that some of us opted for cash settlement and as you know many of our colleagues are broke.
“Instead of picking a car for that ridiculous amount they quickly demanded for the cash to survive the harsh economic situation in the country.
Another source privy to this development further explained to TNG that”agreed most of us are broke but we are not asking the questions as to how much these cars were purchased by the House leadership.
“Our members are so desperate to collect between N16m and N17m and forget the fact that after four years the cars will be valued and a certain percentage of our severance fee will be deducted so that you can go home with the car.
“The question now is after four years how do you accommodate the deduction when you have collected cash” he wondered”
Asked about how the Reps apply for the cash settlement, the source said:
“It’s simple once you signify interest that you want cash you are immediately directed to the contractor who pays you the money and you must sign for it.
On a further probe by TNG, it was revealed that in the 8th Assembly, N980,000.00 was deducted from the severance fee of lawmakers which was N5m.
Some of the lawmakers in the eighth Assembly also collected but almost the entire amount was given to the members in US dollars.
In the ninth Assembly, the lawmakers are getting less than half of N42m the contract sum per unit of the cars.
