The Commissioner for Investment and Abuja Liaison in Ebonyi State, Ekumankama Joseph Nkama has withdrawn his surety for former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim.
Nkama had stood as surety for Anyim in a trial instituted by the Economic and a Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the former Senate President.
However, Nkama withdrew his surety status due to what he termed “recent events in the last two weeks” involving the ex-Senate President.
The Commissioner withdrew his surety in a letter addressed to Chairman of the EFCC on Friday.
The letter reads: “Ekumankama, Joseph Nkama, Commissioner of Investment & Abuja Liaison, Ebonyi State Government, wish to formally withdraw as the surety for His Excellency, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.
“You may recall Sir, that Senator Anyim Pius Anyim was detained while under investigation and when given bail conditions by commission, I availed myself as his surety knowing fully well the adverse effect his action and inaction could impose on my constitutional rights should he decides to act in a manner devoid of the expectations of him by the Commission.
“Sir, I regret to inform you that recent events in the last two weeks in my State has given me food for thought and my conscience could no longer allow me to continue to stand as a surety for Senator Pius Anyim.
“I have also considered the recent event involving Senator Ali Ndume and Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Defunct Pension Reform Task Team, I am most particularly convinced that my decision to withdraw as surety will best grant me the needed peace of mind to function effectively in all responsibilities demanded of me.
“Please accept the assurance of my esteemed regards”.
Recall that Anyim and the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi have been involved in a face-off, following the governor’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Umahi had alleged that he planned his defection with Anyim but the latter changed his mind at the last minute.
In a response to Umahi’s claim, the former Senate President had alleged that his life was threatened for refusing to defect with Umahi.
