Inaugural edition of West African Basketball Classics ends today in Lagos

The final of the Final Four of the inaugural edition of the West African Basketball Classics (WABC), takes place today at the Sports Hall of the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.
Nigeria’s Gidi Giants of Lagos will battle ASPAC of Benin Republic for the bragging rights of champions of the maiden edition of the championship that involves six clubs from four countries.
They are:
✓ Gidi Giants – Nigeria
✓ Kwara Falcons – Nigeria
✓ ASPAC – Benin Republic
✓ ASPAL – Benin Republic
✓ Swallows – Togo
✓ GRA Braves – Ghana
To reach the final, Gidi Giants of Lagos defeated ASPAL of Benin Republic 61-43 points while ASPAC of Benin Republic narrowly beat Nigeria’s 2022 League winners Kwara Falcons 65-63 points in the semifinals.
Gidi Giants topped phase one and two of west african tournament on their way to the City of Excellent – Lagos for the Final Four.
ASPAC, ASPAL and Kwara Falcons also had a good outing during the regular season but Swallows and GRA Braves fell by the wayside and couldn’t find their into Lagos.
Before the the grand finale, ASPAL will take on Kwara Falcons for the third place game by 1pm while the final is scheduled for 5pm.
The West African Basketball Classics which has the backing of FIBA Africa Zone 3, Port Autonone de Cotonou, NSIA Banqe and the world governing body of basketball FIBA has attracted lots of kind words from basketball stakeholders across the sub region.
The championship which is the first of its kind in the sub region has the backing of Sports Wear manufacturer PEAK.
The West African Basketball Classics is an annual event that will be expanded to accommodate more teams in the future.
