Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy admits he was almost talked out of quitting football by a job advisor.
Mendy famously found himself struggling in the lower divisions early in his career.
He told France Football: “This is real life. No more club, no job, what are you doing now? My mother said to me: ‘You have no money, but you worked so you are entitled to unemployment’. I didn’t know how to do it, my family shows me, helps me. I have an appointment at Pôle Emploi. You arrive, you stand in line, guys yelling at the counter, people complain about the wait.
“When it’s your turn, the advisor does his best but also as quickly as possible because he still has fifty behind him. Your case is one among others, he will not pay more attention to yours. You are in the system. I do my interview, he says to me: ‘What are you looking for?’ ‘A club because I am a football player.’ ‘Ah, but we can’t help you, next!’ Basically, he tells me that I have to think about something else.
“And when a guy you don’t know tells you that, you think. I said to myself: ‘This is it, the football that I was hoping to achieve, must give up on it.’ The guy, when he sends me back, that’s it.”
