Facebook founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, asked for forgiveness for ways his “work was used to divide people rather than bring us together”.

Zuckerberg made a Facebook post to mark the end of Yom Kippur, the Jewish holiday of atonement on Saturday.

“Tonight concludes Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews when we reflect on the past year and ask forgiveness for our mistakes.

“For those I hurt this year, I ask forgiveness and I will try to be better. For the ways my work was used to divide people rather than bring us together, I ask forgiveness and I will work to do better.

“May we all be better in the year ahead, and may you all be inscribed in the book of life,” the post read.

While the Facebook founder did not, however, referred to any particular issue, his company and technology companies have been severely criticized for the involvement of Russia in the 2016 US presidential election.

Zuckerberg had earlier denied activities on his platform had influenced the result of the election, but succumbed on September 6th when he hinted an operation likely based in Russia spent about $100,000 on thousands of US ads promoting socio-political messages on the platform.

Facebook said 3,000 ads and 470 “inauthentic” accounts and pages spread polarizing views on topics including gay rights, immigration and race.

Meanwhile, the company has launched an overhaul of how it handles paid political ads, after US lawmakers threatened to regulate its activities that bother on secretive ads that run during election campaigns.
