MTN recharge cards are selling for N20 extra, company denies involvement

MTN recharge cards are presently selling for N20 extra and MTN Nigeria has denied it is involved in the price increase.

TheNewsGuru noticed the hike in price of call cards, popularly known as recharge card, across all denominations, with extra cost of N20, at the ‘business centre’ of card retailers in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos state.

MTN, currently battling a huge fine levied on it by the federal government, has said it is not involved in the current hike in price of its recharge cards.

In a brief chat with different retailers engaged in discussion of the recharge cards price hike, the vendors said that different forces have come to play for the 2% price increase noticed. They declined to give details of these forces, but however indicated MTN is not unconnected.

TheNewsGuru reports MTN’s customer care agent who identified himself only as Ifeanyi as saying he cannot identify what is responsible for the hike in price of MTN recharge cards.

“Right now, I do not have perfect information about that,” said Ifeanyi, the customer care representative.

“What I will request you to do for you to get a proper answer about that, you may need to visit or lodge a complaint at any of our office that is close to you. So that we can be able to take the issue up and be able to look into it,” Ifeanyi added.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared 2017 Year of the Consumer, and signed popular comedienne Helen Paul and Ali Nuhu as NCC face of the consumer to drive the Year of the Consumer point home.

Even, the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, had enjoined telecoms consumers to be proactive, calling on Nigerians to assist his Ministry and the NCC in the much touted short comings such as poor quality services, unsolicited SMS and unauthorized deductions by telecom service operators in the country.

Shittu said “Nigerians have the right to complain about unsavoury services they experienced… from telecom operators,” adding that “The ministry always put regulatory agencies on their toes to do the needful”.

NCC on different occasions has said telecoms consumers are golden.
