Need we define some terms from this outset? Okay. But let’s not go too academic.
Simply, polygamy is the practice of marrying multiple spouses. When a man is married to more than one wife at the same time, sociologists call this polygyny. When a woman is married to more than one husband at a time, it is called polyandry.
In contrast to polygamy, monogamy is marriage consisting of only two parties – a man and a wife.
Interestingly, polygamy recently came to fore with the formal announcement of a second wife by Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie.
His announcement indeed broke the internet, popping up different discussions and arguments about polygamy – is it right? Is it wrong? Sorry, but this is not the story today.
Honestly, many people, even polygamists themselves, are of the opinion that “It is not easy to run a polygamous house…” said, Oga Bello who is also a polygamist. Let’s also make this story for another day. Thanks.
Today, TheNewsGuru has unearthed polygamous homes, you didn’t know existed among Nollywood actors before now. Shocked? Don’t be. Yul was not the first polygamist in Nollywood, after all. Are you ready to count? Let’s go!

Yul Edochie
Of course, you know why it has to be Yul first. If not for any other thing, he was the one who bequeathed polygamy some prominence in recent times.
On the 27th of April, 2022, the actor who has been married to his wife May, for seventeen years took to social media to announce that he has a son outside his marriage with another woman, Judy Austin, now his second wife. His announcement had read: “It’s time for the world to meet my son. His name is STAR DIKE MUNACHIMSO YUL-EDOCHIE.@stardikeyuledochie. Born by my second wife @judyaustin1. And I love him so much, just as much as I love my other children.”
You see? Yul has to be the first Nollywood celebrity on our list to be married to more than one wife, and the reason he cited was because “You can hardly choose who to fall in love with.” Please read: “UPDATE: You can hardly choose who to fall in love with – Yul Edochie alleges.”

Oga Bello
Oga Bello needs no introduction. Need he? Born Salami Adebayo but popularly known as Oga Bello. Oga Bello is a popular Nollywood actor and father of another popular actor, Femi Adebayo. Oga Bello is married to two wives. His first wife is Alhaja Ejide who he confirmed he first met in primary school. They became friends and later started a romantic relationship. They’ve been married for over 40 years.
Oga Bello met his second wife, Iya Lai, through his younger sister. Speaking during an interview about running a polygamous home, he said: “It is not easy to run a polygamous house, and it is only by God’s grace one can do that. It cannot be applicable to everybody. The best marriage is that of one man and a wife, but if any of my children’s destiny is to have more than a wife, then there is nothing I can do about it. I believe I am destined to be a polygamous person.”

Jide Kosoko
Surprised? Oh yes! Jide Kosoko is a polygamist. The legendary actor was reportedly married to two women earlier in his life.Unfortunately, lost both women eleven months apart during labour. After that, he went ahead to marry two more women bringing his overall total number of wives to four. Speaking about it, Kosoko said: “I never envisaged being a polygamist though I am a product of one. My parents didn’t support it either. My first wife was a businesswoman. I craved for somebody who was in the same field as me. In those days, the best advice you can get is from your better half and that was how the second woman came to be. Along the line, I lost the two to childbirths within 11 months interval. I had seven children at that time, so I didn’t plan remarrying or having more children again.”
“But after much persuasion from my doctor and relatives, I decided to have a woman with the agreement of not having more children but a complete African woman will not agree to that. One thing led to the other and I got two women again. So being a polygamist is not intentional but God’s design which I do not have a right over.”
Okayyy… so should we say Jide Kosoko is polygamist of polygamists???
Phew! What’s really your take on polygamy? Do you think Yul Edochie will do well as a polygamist? Please hit the comments. Let’s have your thoughts.
