The police officer accused of murdering George Floyd has been released from jail after posting $1million bail.
Derek Chauvin, 46, was released from Oak Heights Prison in Minneapolis Wednesday morning after posting non-cash bond. He faces second-degree murder charges over Floyd’s May 25 killing.
According to reports a staff at Oak Heights confirmed Chauvin was no longer in their custody, having been transferred there a few days after 43 year-old Floyd’s death over fears for his safety.
Details on Chauvin’s bail conditions have not yet been released, and it is unclear where he has gone to stay. Chauvin was the Minneapolis Police Department officer filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he cried ‘I can’t breathe.’
Floyd died after Chauvin knelt on his neck for eight minutes, 46 seconds, with his dead sparking ongoing Black Lives Matter anti-police brutality protests across the US.
Chauvin was fired in the wake of Floyd’s killing, and subsequently charged with second-degree murder, as well as third-degree murder and manslaughter charges. He denies the allegations made against him.
