The immediate past US President, Donald Trump, has announced his decision to contest the 2024 presidency under the aegis of the Republican party.
Trump is planning to stage a return to the white House after losing his re-election bid to present president Joe Biden in 2020.
Trump made this known during a speech at his Mar-a -Lago home in Florida.
According to him, he wants to make America great and glorious again if given the mandate.
“In order to make America great and glorious again. I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said.
Recall that Trump won the US presidency for the first time in 2016 when he contested against Hillary Clinton.
The former president’s stint at the White House – between 2017 and 2021 – was one of the most tumultuous in modern US history. He was impeached twice, and his harsh rhetoric, which critics say often veered into explicit bigotry, deeply polarised the country.
Trump has already secured some endorsements for the 2024 race, including from senior House Republican Elise Stefanik.
Trump would become the second President to retake the White House if he succeeds in 2024, thereby making him the 45th and the 47th president, respectively.
