It was another victory song Saturday night for Senator Bernie Sanders, as he swept the votes in Nevada Caucuses, even as he promised justice to all if elected President. It was the second straight victory in his kitty. He won the popular votes in Iowa.
Sanders latest victory came after his strong showing in New Hampshire, where he came top ahead of other contenders, particularly former Vice President Joe Biden, who came fifth.
Interestingly, Biden bounced back in Nevada with 23.8% of the votes, trailing Sanders who polled 46.6%. Former Mayor Pete Buttigieg came third with 13.6%, Senator Elizabeth Warren’s 8.7% placed her in fourth position, Billionaire Tom Steyer 3.5% and Senator Amy Klobuchar 3.4% put them in fifth and sixth positions respectively.
In his victory speech in far away San Antonio, Texas, an upbeat Senator Sanders introduced his wife, Jane, as the next “First Lady of the United States.”
“In Nevada, we have just put together a multigenerational, multiracial coalition, which is going to, not only win in Nevada, it’s going to sweep this country,” Sanders said. “And in Nevada and in New Hampshire and in Iowa, what we showed is that our volunteers are prepared to knock on hundreds and hundreds of thousands of doors. That no campaign has a grassroots movement like we do, which is another reason why we’re going to win this election.”
“They are sick and tired of a president who is undermining American democracy. Who thinks he is above the law. And who, apparently, has never read the Constitution in this country. They want an administration which is based on the principles of justice. Economic justice. Social justice. Racial justice. And environmental justice.”
“Now, Trump and his friends think they are going to win this election.”
“They think they’re going to win this election by dividing our people up based on the color of their skin or where they were born or their religion or their sexual orientation. We are going to win because we are doing exactly the opposite. We’re bringing our people together! Black and white and Latino. Native American, Asian-American. Gay and straight. We are bringing our people together around an agenda that works for the working people of this country, not the one percent.”
Sanders promised that, “We are going to put in place a government that believes in justice.”
He declared that “all people are entitled to higher education”, adding that College and university will be tuition free. He restated one of his campaign mantra saying “Health care is a Human Right not a privilege.”
“People should not go bankrupt because they have cancer”, he said.
“We will reform racist criminal justice system. Together, we shall end the demonization of illegal immigrants”, he said. He promised to revoke all anti immigrants Executive Orders on his first day in office.
The battle ground shifts to South Carolina before the March 3rd Super Tuesday which will involve fourteen states.
