Abiodun Adebanjo is one Nollywood hunk making waves in the Yoruba sector of the movie industry.
The rising actor popular who starred in movies like Sonate, Basira Badiya, Wale Danger and others said it is wrong to believe actresses are richer than actors.
He told TheNewsGuru: “When people say actresses are richer than actors, It is wrong because you don’t know our account balance. You can’t expect me to show off the way a lady will show off. This is showbiz, I might not do that. It’s a false idea to think actresses are doing well than actors. We are all doing well. There are two sides to a coin. The person you see living the flashy life on social media, you don’t know their account balance. Most practitioners in the industry have side businesses, since the government isn’t supporting. We are spending more than we earn. The expectation is generally high. Even though it’s a ‘Waka pass’ role you played in a movie, hoodlums will still want to get money from you when you step out. I know actresses and actors that are doing well. We just need to stay true to ourselves”.
On how he copes with the attention he gets from female fans, Adebanjo said: “The only thing I tell people is that it’s been God. In everything I do I ask God for divine intervention and mercy. You cannot do without female fans. They are the salt of this earth. At the same time, one has to be careful. I just try as much as possible to stay away from the bad ones and be friends with the good ones. I get weird messages from some of them from time to time. You hear things like: ‘You are my crush, can we hangout?’ .I try as much as possible not to smell what I won’t eat”.
Adebanjo added that people in the diaspora underestimate Yoruba movies.
“A lot of people in the diaspora think less of Yoruba movies. I hear comments like they are tired of the same story line. Some of them complain about our movies having the same story with different title and the same cast. This motivated me to produce my own movie, hinting that we still have some good movies and good producers. I just wanted to do something different. In every sector there are quacks and there are experts. We have some quack producers and we have some others who are good. It’s a 50-50 thing. There are movies you would watch and critique, while there are some you would watch and won’t even stand up while watching them”.
