Stories of domestic violence are gradually becoming a common part of our society. Every week, there is always a story of a man that killed his wife or a woman that tried killing the husband. Even celebrities are not left out.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Nollywood actress, who was among the 2013 Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, has urged the government to place stiff penalties on perpetrators of domestic violence. The beautiful screen diva said domestic violence won’t stop until it becomes a punishable offense.

“Domestic violence is a disease that needs to be cured and eradicated. This is not a disease that we don’t have a cure for. The cure is right there we just need to be bold enough to stand up and put legislation in place. Until it is a punishable offense, it probably won’t stop. It’s not enough for us to appeal to people’s senses. Because the people who do this, have no sense. But you have to put fear in them so they can know there are repercussions. Is it worth me going to jail for, Is it worth me losing my life for? Just because I am angry and I want to beat someone? Then you think twice next time” she opined
