Determined to fast track resolution/definition of Internal boundaries, the National Boundary Commission (NBC) in collaboration with the Ogun state government is organizing a 2 day interactive session in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital to engage stakeholders from the South-West zone on the best approach to establishing peace regime in the zone.
In his welcome address, Director General of the NBC, Surv. Adamu Adaji revealed that the Session is intended to serve as an avenue of sensitizing stakeholders on the activities of boundary managers at the three levels of government as well as providing the platform for cross fertilization of ideas on the best strategies that would enhance speedy resolution/definition of their respective internal boundaries.
Adaji traced the history of boundary conflicts in the zone to the emergence of new states without the prerequisite definition and demarcation of the internal boundaries.
According to him, these conflicts at various times made different governments at different times to set up AdHoc Commission to handle disputes arising from the states creation.
Failures on the part of the Ad Hoc Commission to successfully handle all the boundary related issues Adaji said has compelled the Federal Government to establish the National Boundary Commission as a specialized border interventionist Agency to address all boundary disputes across the country.
He further said that the states were mandated to constitute the states and local government boundary committees to handle inter and intra boundary disputes to complement the works of the NBC.
He urged participants to evolve far reaching ideas that will facilitate speedy resolution of boundary related issues particularly in the zone and in Nigeria at large.
In his vote of thanks, Head, Research and Policy Analysis Department, Barr. Amina Nyako reiterated the Commission’s commitment to ensuring peaceful border regime between the constituent states in the federating states and between Nigeria and her proximate neighbours.
In doing this she said, the National Boundary Commission will continue to monitor trans border relations with a view to detecting areas of tension and possible conflict and finding a lasting solution that will promote trans boundary cooperation.
She charged participants at the event to join hands with the NBC in the discharge of its mandates saying “the tempo towards peaceful coexistence can only be sustained through joint efforts.
The occasion was declared opened by the Governor of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun with all the Deputy Governors in the region and a representative of Lagos state Deputy Governor who double as Chairmen of their respective state boundary committees in attendance.
