“Tinubu is an elder brother of mine and I respect him for who he is,” said the presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi.
He described the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, as his elder brother, whom he respects.
The former governor of Anambra made this known during a media chat on #WithChude.
When asked about the recent video that went viral in which he reportedly labeled Tinubu as unfit to rule Nigeria, Peter Obi stated that he respects Tinubu for his contributions to Nigeria.
Obi added: “They have contributed one way or the other in the past and they have to be respected and recognised in due time, but I just tried to explain that because they contributed in the past and everything doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to stay forever and ever. They move on and things move on.
“It’s like Brazil today, they recognise that sometimes, Pele was a star, a fantastic footballer but they are not going to field him in today’s match.
“Tinubu is my respected elder brother. The only thing I’m saying is where we are today… It is a job that requires physical and mental energy, because the country is in a mess. It’s a 24-hour job.”
TheNewsGuru.com reports that in the first post-transition Lagos State gubernatorial election, Tinubu won by a wide margin as a member of the Alliance for Democracy over the Peoples Democratic Party’s Dapo Sarumi and the All People’s Party’s Nosirudeen Kekere-Ekun.
Four years later, he won re-election to a second term over the PDP’s Funsho Williams by a reduced margin.
Tinubu’s two terms were marked by attempts at modernizing the city of Lagos and his feuds with the PDP-controlled federal government.
After leaving office in 2007, he since played a key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013.
The APC presidential candidate served as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and Senator for Lagos West during the brief Third Republic.
In June 2022, he was chosen as the All Progressives Congress nominee in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election.
