Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, addressed the situation on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. Adenola announced that a nationwide protest against economic hardship is scheduled for August, set to take place across all states and the FCT.
The protest comes amid severe inflation and economic difficulties in Nigeria, exacerbated by recent government policies such as the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange windows. These policies have caused a sharp rise in the prices of food and basic commodities.
Adenola had previously sent a letter dated July 26, 2024, to the FCT minister requesting the use of Eagle Square for the protest. However, the minister claimed he had not received the letter. Adenola attributed this delay to bureaucratic inefficiencies, asserting that the letter would be delivered to the minister on Monday before the protest begins on Thursday.
Adenola criticized the minister for requesting payment for the use of Eagle Square, describing it as a public property. He questioned how impoverished Nigerian youths could afford such fees, emphasizing that the protest will proceed as planned on August 1.
