Despite the economic recession, there were still some grand events that shaped the Nigerian entertainment industry in 2016. These events had the biggest stars in attendance and people had one thing or the other to say about them. In no particular order, we take a look at events that rocked the entertainment scene in 2016.
- Alibaba January 1st Concert
Alibaba started 2016 with his annual comedy show. When he started out, no one envisaged he would be able to sustain it to this moment. The organization, logistics, publicity and attendance only confirms that Alibaba is a king as far as entertainment is concerned.
- 3 Thrones Concert
For fun seekers who thronged the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, venue of 3 Thrones Concert which held on the 25th of October, it was one of the events that shaped 2016. Tiwa Savage’s performance was one of the highpoints of the concert. Let’s also not forget the nude lady that painted on stage and also the other, who sauntered the Eko Hotel aisle.
- Rhythm unplugged
Rhythm Unplugged 2016 has been called the most successful event of 2016 according to music lovers. The event ticked all the right spots . It was held on the 23rd of December at Eko Hotel and had breathtaking performances from Tiwa Savage, Adekunle Gold, Tekno, Wizkid and others. The excellent live music coordinated by Cobhams Asuquo made the excitement more intense for the crowd.
- Sunny on Sunday
The Sunny on Sunday Concert was held on the 11th of December at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Revered Juju Maestro, King Sunny Ade ignited Lagos with the epic concert held in his honour. It was not a surprise to see everyone in high spirits as this legend was being celebrated. The Crème de la Crème of the society like Aliko Dangote, billionaire Femi Otedola, former governor of Lagos and current Minister of Works, Power and Housing Babatunde Fashola were in attendance to celebrate this legend. The high point of the show was the auction of a fender guitar crafted by Victor Ehikhamenor. The bid started at a whooping N9m and at the end of the day was being bought by a random member of the audience for 52.1m((Fifty-two million, one hundred thousand naira ).
- Asa live in Lagos
Everyone who attended this epoch making concert at Eko Hotel on May 1st, where Asa performed for 2 hours nonstop, would tell you for free that Asa shut down Lagos. As the guitar wielding singer took the audience through her journey, her energy level didn’t drop for a minute. It was so engaging and captivating that everyone danced and clapped along to every of the song she performed.
6.OLIC 3
I remember writing a rant about how I felt about Olamide Live In Concert on instagram. Olamide Live In Concert 3 a.k.a OLIC #3 was held on December 26th at the Convention Centre of the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, and it was a total departure from the soaring successes recorded from the previous two editions.
It was announced on Christmas day via OLIC’s social media handle that the tickets for regular has been sold out. One would expect that since it had been sold out, on the day of the event tickets won’t be sold. This wasn’t the case as tickets were still being sold at the venue. The capacity of the hall wasn’t big enough for the crowd who were enthusiastically waiting to have a taste of the self-proclaimed baddo. Asides that, Olamide failed to perform with a live band.
- The Headies
One of the downsides of #TheHeadies2016 held on the 22nd of December at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, was the obvious boycott by some Nigerian musicians.
Most of the stars nominated for various categories didn’t show up at the event. One is tempted to think it’s an intentional option they explored.
Olamide wasn’t available to claim his award
Kiss Daniel was back stage when he won his first award for the night
Simi who was present didn’t mount the stage as a result of a wardrobe malfunction
Don Jazzy’s Mavin crew were no were to be found
Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold and other YBNL artistes did not show up at the event
- Soundcity MVP
The 2016 edition of Soundcity MVP Festival was an treasured experience for those who attended. The event was held at Eko Hotel Convention Centre on the 29th of December. It had several celebrities in attendance including Victoria Kimani, Dolapo Sijuwade, Falz, Emma Nyra, Noble Igwe, Moet Abebe, Pearl, VJ Adams, Mimi Onalaja, Toni Tones and more. One of the highpoints of the event was Tekno winning 3 awards.
