Some residents of Lagos on Wednesday said that they always preferred to send text messages to their loved ones instead of giving them Christmas/New Year greeting cards.
Others said that they were always looking forward to sending greeting cards to their friends and relations during Yuletide instead of text messages.
Those who said they preferred giving greeting cards told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the wordings in Christmas/New year greeting cards are usually wisely crafted and the cards are always beautifully designed.
Others said they loved sending text messages because they are easily accessible on their mobile phones.
They said that would save them the time they would have spent in searching for cards to buy from hawkers or from departmental stores at exorbitant prices.
NAN reports that a Christmas card is a greeting card sent to either a relative or a friend as part of the traditional celebration of Christmas and to convey between people a range of sentiments related to Christmastide and the holiday season.
Greeting cards and text messages are also sent to beloved ones on special occasions such as birthdays, birth of new babies, wedding anniversaries, new appointments, to people on sick beds, and to those writing final examinations.
They are also sent to convey thanks or express other feelings.
Miss Rebecca Ahmana, a fashion designer, said that she preferred sending Christmas greeting cards to her friends and relatives because their different designs used to complement the messages they convey.
She said that because of the beauty of such cards, they could also be used to decorate the house, giving aesthetic aura.
“I love and value Christmas greeting cards right from my childhood, and I still have with me those I received from my friends years ago.
“The cards are designed to suite the messages they convey and can create some affinity and bond between the sender and the receiver as well as strengthens relationships.
“The text messages are not like that and technology has not advanced to the level that can make them as appealing and beautiful as real Christmas greeting cards, “she said.
Mr Juwon Matthew, a nightlife operator, expressed his dislikes for the Christmas greeting cards.
Matthew said the idea of sending Christmas cards to people at Yuletide had become an old way of showing emotions adding that they always turned unattractive when old.
“When greeting cards are old, they do no longer look attractive but text messages which are on mobile phones remain meaningful and attractive always,” he said.
Miss Eme Ibrahim, a corps member, said that the greeting cards were more expensive to afford than text messages.
“When I did my calculations, I discovered that a text message costs four naira for every telecommunication network in the country.
“To send text messages to 10 people, I will be spending N400.
“But the cheapest greeting card will go for N100; and to buy for 10 people, I will be parting with N1,000.
“I prefer sending text messages because they are cheaper to afford and can still be referred to after a long period of time,” she said.
A housewife, Mrs Mary Attah, said she had no preference for either of them as a means of communication but had been using them depending on the occasion or festivity.
“For the Yuletide, I send text messages to my friends who are far away and I give greeting cards to my extended family members and neighbours.
“I believe text messages are for loved ones who are far away from us while greeting cards can go for those within and around our neighborhood, “she said.
Also, a businessman, Mr Frank Uchendu, said that text messages on mobile phones were more durable and easily accessible by the reader than greeting cards which the receiver would read and discard them.
He said that there was room to read text messages over and over again later in life but as soon as the receiver reads the cards once, they become wastes and junks that litter the house.
“I love text messages on mobile phones because you absorb the messages over time unlike the cards,’’ he said.
