No doubts , theater has lost its voice since the emergence of Nollywood. Lovers of live theater prefer to visit cinemas or watch the films in the comfort of their homes. This has inadvertently contributed to the dearth of theater in Nigeria
Theater practitioner and Professor of Theatre Arts at the Redeemers University, Professor Ahmed Yerima has lamented on how the emergence of home videos killed the live theater tradition in Nigeria.
According to him, Nollywood is the first and major culprit as people find it easy to watch movies at home. The thespian also said technology has made it easier for people to access the films they want.
Hear him:” Nollywood is the first and biggest problem for theatre and that’s because people find it rather convenient to sit at home and see these movies rather than go out to live-theaters even though variety is the spice of life, and technology has also made it a lot easier for people to have access to a film any time they want to. For instance, at work, anyone can sit behind the system and download whatever movie it is they want to and not even having to go to the cinema to do so”.
