Self-proclaimed Star Boy, Wizkid made a surprise visit today, to the New Afrika Shrine, Ikeja, throwing Ikeja into a screaming uproar.
Wizkid, judged by some as the top pop star, among the wide array of musical stars which currently illuminate the musical scene in Nigeria, and indeed Africa, came clad in a white T-shirt with 76 emblazoned on it. He had on a Palm Angels trousers and a white GUCCI bandana on his head. When his presence became known, the whole of Ikeja went up an uproar, as his numerous fans who heard he was around, quickly dashed there, wishing for a glimpse and a chance to touch and possibly take selfies with him.
The Afro pop artiste, who recently had to cancel his world musical tour because of ill health, was a surprise visitor to the shrine. Musical insiders were nonetheless not surprise that the recuperating star who references Fela Kuti as his major influence, chose The New Afrika Shrine to make an appearance, apparently after recovering from his illness.
Urged on by the mammoth crowd, Wizkid whose latest hit Daddy yo, is still making waves around Africa, Europe and North America, mounted the stage and tried variously to create a medley of his musical delicacies. Surprisingly, however, the Afrika Shrine band, who accompanied him with instrumentations, could not get into the groove. Tried as they can, they could not flow with the rhythm Wizkid seems to desire. In frustration, and despite protestations from the now enthralled crowd, moving crazily to the beat, the Star Boy had to stage a walk out.
It was mid-way into his performance, that he just couldn’t take it anymore. This threw the crowd present at the performance at the Afrika Shrine into frenzy, screaming for more.
To pacify the crowd, the Ojuelegba crooner, expectedly, and in his usual fashion, decided to invoke the rain of money, by throwing hand fulls of Naira notes, causing a money rain. The already frenzied crowd dived, shoved and scrambled for the windfall.
In the cacophony, he was able to sidestep the already electrified crowd, jumped into his bullet proof G Wagon and attempted to zoom. But as soon as the crowd noticed the move, they created a new barricade, stopping him from moving. He had to throw them more Naira bundles till the barricade was parted and he whizzed off.
