Addiction is an action many people struggle with. According to Wikipedia, addiction is defined as, the brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences. Generally, we define addiction as a behaviour people get so used to, and have lots of health danger. Addiction most time have been generally associated with teenagers, however, this is no longer the case, as research has shown that, addiction is not a behaviour only associated with teenagers but adults also.
People who suffer from addiction find it difficult to get help for one reason or the other. Some even get too ashamed of the act, that they find it difficult to ask for help. On the other hand, other see addiction, as normal and have come to accept such acts or habits as a way of life and have no reason to get help, even though it is damaging to their health.
Addictive habits is sometimes a normal behaviour people engage in from time to time, however, it becomes addictive when you continually engage in such acts, even to the extent that it impedes the productivity of such a person towards their day to day activities.
Researchers have been seeking solutions on how to get a one-time drug to cure addiction. It is disappointing as no such drugs exist, nonetheless, there are treatment and things to do, to overcome addiction. These are the things to do that will help people overcome addiction:
1.Engage in activities:
Just as the saying goes, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. This is true for an addict, idling around doing nothing. An idle mind will certainly entertain thoughts, these thoughts will make such a person crave for his addiction. To avoid such thoughts, they must engage their selves in activities.
Such activities will help control their thoughts, and also reduce the desire for addicts, to engage in addictive behaviour. Engaging in activities most especially productive activities will help addicts battle addictions.

It is important to change friends most especially those who are not helping you desist from such addictions. There have been reports that teenagers who are suffering from one form of addiction or the other, were introduced to such acts by friends. This is the reason why addicts need not be around those, who influence them negatively. If you tend to fight addiction, and you are constantly around those who engage in such acts, your effort against addiction will not be productive.
Let’s take, for example, an individual is battling addiction of excessive abuse of drugs, if he has a group of friends that also takes drugs they will certainly advise him, against his decision, it will be wise for such an individual to withdraw from such group of friends to be able to battle such addictive acts. They will need to gain a new set of friends. Most especially those who will influence you positively and will help you overcome your addictions.

It is important for whoever is battling addiction, to get to know his or herself. Many addicts don’t see some of their behaviour as addictive. It is important to identify your addicts and get to know what will work for you in battling such addictions. You can only know this if you understand yourself very well. knowing yourself entails identifying your weaknesses, get to know what triggers the desire or urge. An addict who knows himself and is willing to battle his addiction will know how to go about it.

To overcome addiction, you have to be serious and intentional about the decision. Since you have decided to battle addiction, you have to adhere to whatever instruction you have been given, consciously discipline yourself and ensure that you make no mistake in defaulting or going back to such habits as this will affect the process of your healing.

Don’t be ashamed to ask for help, telling someone about your issue is the right way in the process of overcoming your addiction. Seek help from people in the position of authority to help, most especially someone who you have so much respect for and believe is knowledgeable in handling such case.
