The Uyo Book Club has concluded plans to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the gruesome hanging to death of the Nigerian writer, Environmental activist, poet and scholar, Ken Saro Wiwa with a colloquium to mark the day.
Saro-Wiwa was a world renowned peace advocate who fought for the liberation of the Niger Delta but was cut down in his prime by the Gen. Sani Abacha military junta.
Alongside Isaac Boro who took up arms, fought as a Soldier and was killed during the Nigerian Civil war, Ken Saro Wiwa fought for the rights of his people using the pen and together, they remain two very important agitators in the Niger Delta struggle before the current democratic dispensation.
Invited to lead the discussions at the event which shall centre on Ken Saro-wiwa and issues surrounding the region will be renowned son of Ogoni , Senator Magnus Abe, Patron of the Uyo Book Club, Dr Ekong Sampson, Playwright, Author and Niger Delta expert, Prof. Uwemedimo Atakpo, Poet, Prof. Joe Ushie( of the University of Uyo), Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum, Mr Charles Udoh, among other major speakers and stakeholders.
The Founder of the Uyo Book Club, Dr. Udeme Nana urges lovers of knowledge and people interested in the issues of the Niger Delta to join the session which has already promised to be very engaging.
