Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has condemned a plot by eight members of the Benue State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom.
Atiku said it was an “awkward political development,” to oust the governor who recently decamped from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
It was learned that eight of the 30 lawmakers in the state’s House of Assembly were on Monday aided by the police to illegally occupy the chamber where they served the impeachment.
And Atiku said he was greatly embarrassed by the unfolding political drama in Benue.
I urge the police to remain politically neutral and avoid aiding lawlessness. The loyalty of the police should be to the constitution and the rule of law.

“Any attempt to disregard the rule of law and constitution in the impeachment of a governor is a recipe for anarchy and officially sanctioned lawlessness,” he said in a statement.
